How to Reset Your Home & Routines for Fall

Every year as summer begins to fade away, I find myself craving a fresh start.
And I’m not talking about a brand-new fall wardrobe or all new fall decor, but a quieter kind of reset that helps prepare me for the busier season of life ahead.

Why Fall Feels Like a Fresh Start
As the nights start getting darker earlier, the air gets a little crisper, and everything starts to feel cozier . That’s when I feel the urge to declutter, get organized, and prepare for the season ahead the most.
Summer is one of my favorite seasons, but it can also be busy and a little unstructured.
Between longer days, weekends away, and summer projects, our normal routines can easily get pushed aside. We simply want to enjoy the nice weather while it’s here.
Maybe that’s why fall has always felt like its own little new year to me. It’s a chance to settle back into routines and get our home and life back in order.
It’s also a reminder that we’re heading into the final few months of the year, but there’s still time.
We don’t have to wait until January to start working toward our goals again. We can pick up something we’ve let slip or decide what we want to be more intentional about.
We’re also heading into a busy work season and the holidays. I’ve found that a simple fall reset helps me feel more prepared and a little calmer. It keeps everything from piling up at once.
And for me, a reset isn’t about going out and buying a bunch of new things.
It’s actually the opposite. A reset can mean using what we already have, clearing out what we don’t need, and simplifying our routines. More than anything, it’s a chance to be intentional about how we want the rest of the year to look.
Use What You Already Have
As the season shifts toward fall, we start seeing marketing for all the newest seasonal finds. Suddenly, it feels like we need new fall decor, a new wardrobe, and more.
And I’m not going to lie—I love finding a cute new piece of decor. I also love making my home feel like a new, refreshed space.
But I’m here to tell you that we can use what we already have and still create a welcoming, cozy home this fall.
Sometimes it’s as simple as moving things around and putting them in new spaces. Pull out the fall decor you already have before heading to the store and try styling it differently this year.
Move a basket to another room, bring out your favorite blankets, use up the candles you already have, or switch around some of the decor you keep out year-round.
Sometimes just changing where something is can make it feel new again.
The same goes for our closets.
Before buying a bunch of new fall clothes, pull out what you already have tucked away from last year. Put together a few outfits and figure out what you actually need before shopping.
You might realize you’re only missing one or two staple pieces instead of needing an entirely new fall wardrobe.
And if you do want to add something new this season, try thrifting first or even DIYing something yourself.
Thrift stores can be such a fun place to find unique baskets, frames, vases, sweaters, or other fall pieces without always buying brand-new.
You can also get creative with what you already own—make your own fall decor, sew or alter a clothing piece, or repurpose something that’s been sitting around your home.
Sometimes those pieces end up feeling even more special because you made them your own.
I think this is something that can easily get lost in homemaking.
Making our homes feel beautiful and cared for doesn’t always mean bringing something new into them.
Sometimes caring for what we already have, getting creative with it, and appreciating it again is just as much a part of homemaking.
Clear the Clutter
My ultimate fall reset tip would be to declutter before adding anything more to your home.
Before I start bringing out the cozy blankets and fall decor, I like to make a little breathing room first.
And this doesn’t have to mean a massive whole-house declutter where you go through every drawer and cabinet. Instead, I like to think of it as a simple seasonal purge.
Focus on the areas that are going to affect your everyday life the most as we head into fall.
Like your closets, pantry, entryway, and main living spaces.
Although, if you’re feeling motivated and want to use this as an opportunity for a whole-house purge, by all means, go for it!
Listen to yourself and do what feels best for your family and your home in this season.
Sometimes that might mean a gentle declutter of a few problem areas, and other times it might mean you’re ready for a full purge before the end of the year.
Your reset doesn’t have to look the same as anyone else’s.
Start with your closets as you switch out your seasonal clothes. Did you wear all of your summer pieces this year? If not, ask yourself if you really need to pack them away for another year.
Then, look through your fall clothes. This is a great time to see what you own before deciding what you need to buy.
Then move into the areas you use every day.
Look through the pantry for expired food or things that need to be used up. Clear the shoes and random items collecting around the entryway. Then tidy your main living spaces before bringing out your seasonal decor.
I like to keep it simple and ask myself four things: Can I trash it, donate it, relocate it, or use it up?
The goal isn’t to have a perfectly decluttered home by the end of the day. It’s simply about clearing out things that aren’t serving your home anymore. You’re making a little more room for the season ahead.
Before replacing something you get rid of, give yourself time to see if you actually miss it.
You might realize your home doesn’t need something new in its place at all.
Refocus on What Matters
Transitioning into the fall season doesn’t always mean you have to declutter your home.
Sometimes it can also mean doing a little “decluttering” in your personal life and refocusing on what actually matters to you—whether that’s your marriage, friendships, family, home, or personal goals.
Take some time to sit down with a notebook, or even just give yourself a quiet moment to think about how you want the rest of the year to look.
What goals did you make at the beginning of the year? Which ones still matter to you? What can you let go of? And is there something you would really love to finish before January comes around?
I would encourage you to choose just 2–3 priorities for the rest of the year instead of feeling like you need to work on everything at once.
Maybe you want to cook more meals at home, spend more evenings off your phone with your husband, invite friends or family over more often, save a little extra money, finally finish that house project you’ve been putting off, or simply slow down and be more present during the upcoming holiday season.
And your priorities don’t all have to be things you can cross off a to-do list.
Maybe one of them is being more intentional in your marriage, calling your family more often, making time for friendships, or creating slower evenings at home.
Sometimes the things that matter most aren’t necessarily the things that make us feel the most “productive.”
Fall can be such a good time to reflect on these things.
As we start cozying up at home and settling into a more structured season again, we still have a few months left in the year to make meaningful changes.
You don’t have to wait until January for another fresh start.
Sometimes being intentional with just a few things that matter to you is enough to change how the rest of your year feels.
A Fresh Start Doesn’t Mean More
A fresh start doesn’t always require something new.
Fall can be about less clutter, fewer unnecessary purchases, simpler routines, clearer priorities, and more time for the things and people who matter most to you.
And remember, you don’t need to accomplish your entire fall reset in one weekend. Pick one area and start there.
Maybe that means cleaning out your closet, getting back into a simple routine, or sitting down and thinking about what you want the rest of your year to look like.
I hope this fall reset guide helps you slow down, map out these last few months of the year, and focus on what really matters to you and your home.
So pull out your favorite blanket, light a candle you already have tucked away, and start creating those cozy fall days you’ve been dreaming about—one simple reset at a time.

Hi there,
I’ve been dabbling with several widely used at-home methods for understanding my skin undertone—basically trying to find out if I lean more cool, warm, or neutral. I wanted to see which DIY test might give the most accurate clue, so I compared three common approaches: checking vein color, the gold vs. silver jewelry test, and using photos from my phone camera with different lighting.
For vein color, my wrists mostly show a mix of blue and green, which left me undecided whether I’m cool or warm. The jewelry test was similarly confusing; silver seemed to enhance my features better in natural light, but gold didn’t look off either, especially indoors under warmer lighting. The camera test was the most puzzling—depending on whether I took selfies in daylight or under a yellow lamp, the apparent undertone shifted considerably.
I even came across a post that tested these DIY methods side by side and discussed their pros and cons. It brought up some interesting points about how lighting and subjective interpretation can really skew results. That article is worth a look if you’re trying to cut through conflicting advice find my color palette .
At this point, I’m a bit lost. None of these tests alone has given me a clear answer, and I wonder how much they truly capture skin undertone without professional tools. Has anyone had positive experiences with one particular method or maybe combined tests that helped nail it down? Maybe there’s a less-talked-about approach that’s more dependable when doing this at home?
I’d welcome any thoughts or recommendations. What worked best for you, and did you find any DIY methods reliably reflect your undertone once you saw your full color palette? Appreciate it!
